Barbra Streisand is certainly not looking to act in any heavy dramas. Hot off her second appearance in the Focker Series, Little Fockers, she has been set to star opposite Seth Rogen in My Mother's Curse.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Paramount has picked up the comedy which has been in development for a few years. Rogen and Streisand were offered the roles last year but it wasn't firm until Paramount came along.
Per both the Reporter, the story is about"an inventor (Rogen) who invites his mother on a cross-country trip as he tries to sell his new product while also reuniting her with a lost love."
Directing will be Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, 27 Dresses) with a script by Dan Fogelman (Cars) based on his own life. Lorne Michaels, John Goldwyn and Evan Goldberg are producing.
In other Streisand news, she is trying to do a big screen remake of Gypsy. If she can obtain all the rights, she would produce, direct and star as Mama Rose, one of the plumb roles in all of acting. On stage, the role has won Tonys for Angela Lansbury (1975), Tyne Daly (1990) and Patti LuPone (2008) with Ethel Merman from the original production (1960) and Bernadette Peters (2003) receiving nominations. On film, the part has been played by Rosalind Russell and Bette Midler.
According to the New York Daily News, Streisand needs to get approval from Arthur Laurents (book), Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) and the estates of Jules Styne (music) and Jerome Robbins (director). Laurents is the toughest of the group as he has specifics on how the role must show the brutal side of the Mama Rose character when dealing with her children, but it seems Streisand may have won him over. The 92-year-old told the Daily News"Barbra and I have been getting along very well now for some time. We've talked about it a lot, and she knows what she's doing. She has my approval."
